Monday...
Today when I arrived at the school, I was told that I'd be in a year 5 class. The morning consisted of running around trying to figure out plans, getting Success Criteria and sheets photocopied, and ensuring I could actually teach what was in the plan. I had to do a quick refresher course on fractions but don't worry, I was able to jump into the English lesson (discussing their favourite book). The year 5 class was rewarding in the sense that I got to talk with them in a more mature way and also see them really sink their teeth into the maths and english lessons. But I found it tough because it's not an age group I really thrive with. I had a little issue with the computer today. Mostly because all the teachers at this school have laptops and they take their computers with them when they have planning, etc. Mostly, it means I'm forced to go back to basics with my teaching, though that is hard sometimes due to the fact that all the lesson plans are on the computer. The TA was amazingly supportive (as I 'm finding most are!) and she helped me! However, in the afternoon I was on my own but, with the help, of the other year 5 teacher, we survived! As I was without a computer, what e ended up having to do was have the class I was in join her class for the "topic" lesson (which happened to be based on the Anglo Saxons). Overall, it was an alright day. I survived year 5!
Tuesday...
Arrived at school to discover I was back in the same class. It was good because I somewhat knew what I was getting into and was able to carry on from the work of the day before. This time in maths we were talking about adding fractions, both equivalent and not. I enjoyed teaching that to the students. Funny that as a student, myself, I did not thrive in maths, and now it might be my favourite subject to teach. At lunch, I was surprised by the Tech staff as they presented me with a laptop! So, now not only do I have my own marking pen, a lanyard with nametag, I also have my own school computer (and email!)! This is awesome! I realized, later, however it's not SO awesome as I have to carry it with me for the walk to and from school WITH my regular school bag. Perhaps I'll leave it, when I can, in the year 3 room. Not much to report on today. At the end of the day, we played a few rounds of heads down, thumbs up ( or as I call it "Heads up, 7 up). When I got home tonight, I was told that we were going back to our old stomping grounds of Ocean Village. Maggie had a date, and in our usual fashion, the rest of us would be there to "spy". Though, really, we were off in our own area chatting and enjoying. It was a good night at P &P (our local classy pub before we moved). Hannah and Alex ended up going out after P &P as well. But I had to hit the hay as I was pooped. Luckily, tomorrow morning will be fairly relaxed as it's a planning morning.!
Wednesday...
Before we can launch into the planning, first the classes sort themselves into boys and girls and the boys change in our classroom. They're usually chatty and take forever.. But such is year 3 life. Then, what must happen is a Guided Reading Session. I enjoy this as it allows me to read with a small group of students and sometimes we chat a little bit about the topic they're reading about. Once they've all dispersed for P.E. It's quiet time for the adults.. The first bit of time is spent as Helen says doing the "bits and bobs". haha It really does accurately describe what they do. Just the little tasks that need to get done. In the afternoon, after a planning morning (during which I was asked to plan one English lesson.. Quite a nerve racking experience as it wasn't just me that would be teaching the lesson.) I was in a year 2 class. I also discovered that Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2) runs on a slightly different schedule. So while year 3 lunch ends at 1, year 2 lunch ends at 12:40, so I lost some of my lunch time!! Oh well. In the afternoon with them, we were using the context of the Great Fire of London as a means of discussing materials houses are built out of and why the fire spread so quickly. I quite enjoyed working with them and also reading a bit of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" to them. After the teacher returning and we were marking together once the kids had left, we got chatting. I found out she's been at this school for 5 years and she's about 25. Great now I feel very behind with my life!
Thursday...
Back in my year 3 class. I introduced Division to this so last night I was looking for ways to do this. I'm excited to get back into the regular classroom and have an interactive smart board with activities to do with them! I really want to take advantage of this technology! Thursdays also mean.. music lesson. My class was really good and they listened quite well. It was the second year 3 class that was not listening. Frustrating in that aspect because I was excited to get into this "music plan". I say that in air quotes as really WHO am I to teach music? I'm So not qualified for this... The plan I found online is called "Mood and Movies" it basically looks at how a movie score makes us feel during a movie. The first lesson had us look at a few different soundtracks at key points in movie. In specific, the class will be looking at the "Finding Nemo" soundtrack. The end goal is to make a piece of music for about 10 seconds of film clip in the movie. The lesson plan works for 6 weeks which will take us right up to Christmas. However, since I'll be leaving a week early to go home, I will either leave the presentation of the musical pieces for the supply.. Or maybe with all the chaos of Christmas Holiday, they might present it the week before.. Who knows? I had a good joking moment with my class at we came back together at the end of the day. When we switched classes, the others didn't realize they'd need a pencil so I had my class leave theirs but they worried that their's wouldn't be returned. I promised them they would be and had a few helpers return all the pencil cases back to the owners. I jokingly said my class "see, I told you I'd return them." and someone piped up, " yeah, but you didn't do it, you had someone else do it!" hahah Very true...
Friday...
TGIF. Today went well. Not much to report on. I was teaching Science this afternoon and for a bit the kids were allowed to have free time with the magnets. I worried that if they didn't have a focus, they might get so riled up so Liz helped me come up with having them find things that attracted and repelled. They really enjoyed it!! Not much to report on other than that... I was reminded of the 5 pm closing time at 4:40 today rather than 4:55. It allowed me more time to pack up, etc! Less rushed!
This evening, I enjoyed watching "Anastasia" with Liz. Finally, I can place the song " In the Dark of the Night Evil Will Find Her..." Haunting memories of Tyler singing that to us in the dark at Camp Adelaide!
At 7:30, we decided we needed to do something so we went out! Started at the Lime Bar with a drink, met the bar tender who wants to travel to Ontario and go to Western! Then we went on to a bar that had karaoke! That was fun! Hannah and Liz sang "Summer Lovin'" and then Liz and I sang " You're so Vain". It was very much an older man bar.. We ended up making "friends" with a few older men who kept chatting us up. AND with a man who mustve been in his late 70s and LOVED the karaoke scene! It was actually an interesting night made better by the fact tat we stopped for kebabs, and burgers on the way home. Delish! Once home at shortly after 1, I had a short chat with my family at home. Good friday night!!
Saturday...
Not much to say about today. It was quite the lazy door. I ran out to the store to grab a few things, among them dish detergent! I also began to task or organizing my desk and trying to sort through things. In the end, watched lots of "Scrubs" and a "Friday Night Lights" (among other shows) with the girls. For a saturday, and a weekend, I feel I should have more to write. But really, it was a low key day. Not something I like to always do (I want to take in culture, and fact that I'm in a different country!) but it was a good time this weekend.

First Week Back
A little update on my first week back after half term,
Sunday...
Darc and I were up and in the waiting taxi at 5:40 this AM to catch her 6:15 bus trip. Her bus was a little early but we were ready and waiting for it. After I hugged her goodbye and saw her off, I walked back home in the still dark morning. I saw a few halloween party-ers returning after a full night of fun during the walk back. I promptly returned to bed and woke up at a nicer hour for a weekend. During the day, I organized my room (a task that was much needed!), did laundry, and really just prepared for the week to come. Had a great chat with my kidlets at home (the cousins) and of course their Mamabear as well. In the evening, Hannah, Liz and I went to the church service. It turned out to be a different crowd, as well as a different order of service. Tonight marked the beginning of discipleship classes for the next 6 or so weeks. After a communal worship, we embarked to different "classes" on varying topics. The one the girls and I chose was entitled "The Big Questions." I look forward to learning lots during these sessions. Talked to my parents tonight and booked my flight home (December 13th, babbyyyy). Surprisingly, I'm ready to be back in the routine of school. Looking forward to being in the same school all week!
Monday...
What a hellish day today was. Once I got to school, I was told I was going to be in the other year 3 class. I could handle that. However, things started going awry when I discovered the printers weren't working, I didn't have a computer to use, couldn't print the success criteria, and I wasn't quite sure what was happening for the lessons. For example, Monday is the new spelling test day... I had no idea what their words were...! Don't worry, I eventually figured it out. The kids, coming off of a week break, were wound for sound. I survived the morning, and then in the afternoon, I was just working to 2:20 at which point, we'd go to the Worship assembly as the whole school. Basically today, no one was listening, it was a crazy day. Once home, I discovered that the crappy day was pretty consistent for everyone. We all bonded over the crazy, non-listening students we had.
Tuesday...
This morning, I was informed that I wasn't needed to be anywhere in the morning, so I observed in the classroom I'm set to be in on Thursday and Fridays. It was good to see how their regular teacher goes about the routines. I took copious notes (and wrote Sarah a letter... but we're not telling anyone that.) In the afternoon, I was back in the other year 3 class while the teacher was on course. I was
set to teach the same lesson twice (to both year 3 classes). The lesson required them to use subtitles and use their knowledge of different communication mediums to choose sentences that were relevant. Noone had their listening ears on and by the time I'd been asked the same question 20 times (after going through what they were supposed to do at least 3 times!), I found myself losing patience. By the end of the day, I found myself thinking that today was only slightly better than yesterday. But I guess any improvement, even if slight, IS an improvement, right? I went into this week and these past few days unsure if I would want this long term job (if it were offered to me). Basically, the job would be doing cover for Monday. Tuesday, and Wednesday within the school (with Wednesday morning as planning with the other year 3 teachers) and then teaching in the year 3 class (not the one from Monday and Tuesday) on Thursday and Fridays. It would be nice to be in the same school all week, and have the same class Thurs and Fri. I just don't know what I want anymore... Though, honestly, that's nothing new haha.
In the evening, I had a good Skype chat with Laura. It was nice to catch up with her (as she sat in Tim Horton's and flaunted her warm beverage in front of me!).
It's dark here by 5 o'clock. I find once I get home, I just want to curl in bed and watch tv for the night. It's good because the girls tend to be of the same mindset so we've been watching lots of "The Mindy Project," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," and " New Girl." No complaints from me!
Wednesday...
Wednesday mornings are prep time for the year 3 teachers so I get the privilege of sitting in with them ad witnessing the planning (and hopefully getting to input, too. We had breakfast briefing this morning. Basically it was a quick 10 minute staff meeting. It was during this meeting that I was introduced to the staff as "Laura's replacement" though I hadn't actually been approached officially yet. On Wednesday, the year 3 classes have P.E. but before they are able to go, they have their guided reading. It was good to witness a guided reading session with their regular teacher so I can follow along with the same expectations (especially with the noise level!). I spent the first bit of the planning time with my mind in a whirl not knowing where to start as there were so many acronyms being thrown around. I think, they eventually caught on to the blank stare on my face so I got filled in haha. It was during this time that I was informed that the Thurs, Friday teacher I'm covering for is the year 3 music teacher. Oh boy.. Apparently, the school pays for a website that has great lesson plans, etc. I was given the log in details and managed to find the session I wanted. That's when it all went downhill. This website has many different resources (great!) but I was so confused (not so great!). In the end, I mentioned how confused I was and was told that music isn't really a top priority... So I'll try and figure out something to do with these kids...
In the afternoon I was in a year 4 class. It was their English lesson and I really enjoyed working with them on using their imaginations to write a story. Once I'm home from school, I like to have a nice relaxing night and that's exactly what tonight was.. Also, today being Guy Fawkes day, there were lots of fireworks! Love it!
Thursday...
Back in the year 3 class. The deputy head has told me she's also the coach for teachers to help them improve. We've decided she's going to sit in on a few of my lessons and give me improvement points ( I know my behaviour management is lacking). I'm looking forward to this support and feedback! It's all about the growth!! My day was nothing exceptional. I really enjoy knowing what I'm going to be teaching, not just walking into a classroom cold. I can really sink my teeth into a lesson and make it my own a little bit. In English, we were discussing adjectives and description and their place within a story. I enjoyed getting into it with the kids! At lunch, the other year 3 teacher had to go home, so she had a supply in. The supply came in to ask me what was going on in the afternoon. It felt really odd to be the one being ASKED not ASKING what was happening. I tried to explain to her and we both empathized with each other, being thrown into things. haha My music lesson (not much of one, really!) ended up just being timetables songs and we did some songs in rounds. I taught them black socks and a few other songs. I like being able to show the kids funny songs, but I find they get so wound up that it's hard to bring them back down to a normal noise and energy level. Music went over well.. I survived! And that's what matters, right? I got the call from the agency tonight, the school wants me to stay on until Christmas. I mentioned that my flight was booked for a week earlier than school ends and I was told it wouldn't be a big deal at all. Awesome!
Friday...
Happy Friday! Back to the maths and english. We've been working on partitioning in multiplication and the kids have been thriving! I love working on maths with them especially knowing what their capable of and being able to push them a little bit. I'm enjoying the consistency of the same school and same students. I'm starting to be recognized in the halls, though I'm not at the point of knowing all students names and being able to respond back to them by name. The morning went well and I tried to implement some of the ideas that the deputy head suggested to me for classroom management. It went better, specifically telling them my expectations for the lesson, etc. I'm thinking positively! In the afternoon, the kids got more energetic but that was to be expected-- IT's FRIDAY!! Once the day was over, I was ready to be out but I had some marking to do. It was all going well until I got kicked out of the school at 5! I wasn't even finished my marking! I guess I'm expected to have a life on Friday night, or the building manager wanted to have a life! haha Today was also very exciting as I had my picture taken for a staff lanyard, I got an email, AND I got a marking pen. I tell ya, 'm moving up in the world. I mentioned to the deputy head that it looked like they'd be stuck with me and then did mention my flight booking. And she didn't seem too worried about it, either. That's good news. I'm looking forward to the next few weeks here!
Once home, We had a pretty low key night. I watched some television, began thinking about next week's music lesson (ahh!). I tried to call my Anne (forgetting that she's away at her conference this weekend!). Eventually, I ended up in bed enjoying the fact that I don't have an alarm set for tomorrow morning!
Saturday...
It was a rainy day today. Alex, Hannah and I meandered into the city centre to find some running shoes for Hannah (her trainers, as the Brits say). We also got some local fruit, and a few other things around. I enjoyed the girl time while walking around. On the way back, it started to rain (as usual!) but I'm getting used to it, I think... Once we got home, Hannah and Alex planned to go for a run. I walked into the little area for the shops, and took a bag for donation and also did a little thrift shopping! It was a good shop: I got a new fleece throw, and 2 dresses to be worn with leggings. I'm channeling my inner Hannah as that's her fashion! In the evening, we originally had plans to watch the fireworks for Guy Fawkes day. The fireworks have been going on all week but these were at the local park and supposed to be good! However, it was a very rainy day so we ended up not going. Instead, I got to go over to Zoe and Ryan's for an awesome games night! I really enjoyed playing the Sherlock Holmes game which is like Clue. I realized (not for the first time) that I'm really bad at those games! Ryan and I were neck and neck to being the first ones to finish.. When he read his solution to the crime, I thought for sure he'd gotten it wrong (where did he get those answers from!?) but no... It was I who had gotten it SO wrong.. I don't even have a good excuse for myself...
Once home, around 11:30, I had a great chat with Tyler and Lauren back home! I really enjoyed laughing with them especially after I fell off my bed, and literally couldn't stop laughing... for many minutes.. It's good to have good friends!!

Whirlwind Half Term Break!
Sunday...
We didn't have a set wake up time for this morning which was nice! Last night, we planned out everything we wanted to see while in Ireland by cross checking the walking tour stops with the hop-on, hop-off bus tour stops to ensure we could maximize what we saw and not waste time. Once we were up and moving, we both showered, and dressed. We had planned to be god out of the house by 1:30pm but in the end we left at 1 just because we were ready. Between the two of us, we had one small carry-on suitcase, our purses, and a backpack between us! That's all we took to Ireland. I was pretty proud of our packing expertise! Never have I really gone through an airport with so little luggage, it was freeing! We caught the airport bus at the Town Quay (not far from my flat) and rode the 40 minute trip all the way to the airport. So convenient! Once we got there, we checked in using the automated machines (didn't have to chat with a real person unless we were checking luggage!). We had some time to kill so we walked around the duty free shop and then ended up getting some Ben and Jerry's ice cream from the vending machine. Once it had dispensed, we discovered that we didn't have spoons! We wandered up to the cafe in the airport and ended up hacking away at the ice cream using straws! I thought we were quite inventive! Our plane boarded later than the original time, but soon enough we were on our way! The flight to Ireland was short! Just a little over an hour-- I could get used to that! We landed, exchanged some money, bought our bus ticket into the city centre and then easily found the bus! Walking through the airport, it seemed rather empty and small! I couldn't believe it! It wasn't until we came through on the way back that we realized how large it was! The bus to Dublin city centre took about 40 minutes and it was nice to see everything lit up at night. We met Becky in the hostel, checked in and found our room-- a 10 bedroom with 4 beds upstairs and 6 down. Darc, Becky and I were on the bottom floor bunks. I've never stayed in a hostel before, but I can already tell it will be a learning experience. It's odd sharing a room with people one doesn't already know but what a great way to meet people. Becky, Darcie, and I walked around the street a little bit, we got some groceries and ended up sitting in the hall trying to charge our phones as there was only one outlet in the hostel room! Can you believe it, for 10 people!?!
Monday...
We'd planned a pretty laid back day today. The only "real" thing on the to do list was a walking tour starting at 11. We enjoyed the free breakfast offered by the hostel (toast, cereal, and a warm beverage)-- nothing too fancy. We left a little early for the city hall (where the tour was set to start) so we could walk around in the light of day for a bit. We checked out a nice store that had crests and family history info, Becky and Darcie looked up their information. We decided to go back before we left to take another look (mostly because I really had to pee!). Zoe and Ryan were also in Ireland the same time as we were. We could've started a television show, "The Canadians take Ireland"! They met us there for the tour as well. Our tour guide, James, was amazing! He was very personable, taught us some Gaelic phrases and kept us interested with various stories! By the way, it took me about an hour and a half to find a bathroom! We stopped in the Temple Bar district, by the Clarence Hotel (owned by U2!), for a bathroom break, and a warm beverage. The tour continued on stopping at places like the Dublin Castle, Trinity College, Christchurch Cathedral, etc. We had a great time walking around and learning various Irish facts. One that was memorable surrounded a plaque erected on the bridge going over the river Liffey. In preparation for the new millennium, the city had a countdown timer installed by the bridge. But once the millennium had changed, and the timer was removed, there was a blank spot in the bridge. One day, the city people discovered a plaque had been placed in the bridge in honour of Father Pat Noise who had died in 1919. The people put down flowers and paid their respects for this man. Noone thought too much of it, until someone began to investigate just who Father Pat Noise was. Turns out, he never existed! The plaque was a joke, erected by the HSTI (rearrange those letters...). It was mounted by 2 brothers just as a joke. And in true Irish fashion, it's a good story so it remains on the bridge!
Our tour ended at a pub where we enjoyed a meal (vegetarian lasagna! and Darcie got her fish and chips!). After, we walked around Dublin some more. At this point, it was about 4pm. Becky went to find a bookstore and Zoe and Ryan went to explore. Darc and I wandered upon a pub (imagine) and had our first Irish pint. As we had the map out planning for tomorrow, the bartender suggested we start at the pub with a pint in the morning and see where that would take us! ha! I don't think we'd get very far! As we walked back to the hostel, we noticed a crowd of people waiting for something. We waited a few minutes and discovered it was a parade for the Bram Stoker festival. We watched them go by and headed back to the hostel. Becky was already there and we ended up going out to another pub! What a good night. Once back, we sat in the stairwell and charged our electronics. I started getting pain in my chest once again we were ready for bed. Basically, I spent my night in fitful sleep or awake with the pain in my chest. I took two tylenol from Becky but they didn't do anything. I did get to chat with Laura late at night and she enjoyed that my messaged were "sent from Dublin".
Tuesday...
Very rainy today, and after a long night of little sleep, I was okay for a dreary day. However, it was much cooler than I anticipated and I didn't bring a jacket.. Stupid me! We met another Canadian (from North Bay, wanting to go to Thunder Bay for school-- small world). We had planned our bus tour for today and took it to the jail. I'm glad we went to the jail first as we had a short line up but nothing compared to what it was like when we left! Once at Killmainham Jail, we discovered that part of it was closed off and therefore the admission price was cheaper (I also used my student card and got in for 2 Euros-- awesome!) We did have to wait about half an hour for the tour to start but it was memorable! It was chilly though! Learned about some people who had spent time in the prison and it's history. Once we were through, we caught the bus again (after standing in the rain waiting for it for 15 minutes!). We rode it around back to the Temple Bar area. By this time, I was quite cold. We decided to walk back to the tourist centre we saw this morning (in the same area) and buy an Ireland sweater. The sweater was so warm and cozy! We went for some lunch at Ricky Bobbys (Just kidding, it was called Eddie Rocket's but I think Ricky Bobby's sounds better). It was a 1960s modelled restaurant with Juke boxes at each table. I put 20 cents in thinking I wanted to play Johnny Cash "Ring of Fire" which was K10 but instead I ended up playing "Wild Thing" which was K1... Turns out, there was a 10 button which I found out after I'd pressed the 1... It's okay, I enjoyed the song either way!!
By this time, it had stopped raining, so we walked around the the National Museum of Ireland both the Archaeology and the Natural History location. We enjoyed walking through and taking pictures! After we left, we found the most amazing thing: a Tim Horton's!!! I was SO excited at this as I haven't had a Tim Horton's Hot Chocolate since I left Canada in September. It wasn't as good as home, but it was a good way to tide myself over until Christmas. In the evening, back at the hostel, we made pasta and had a few drinks at the hostel with our new friend, Jon (the Canadian from North Bay). We ended up going out and doing our own mini pub crawl-- stopping at a few different places. We also met Zoe at the last pub which closed at 11:30...! We were shocked! Who knew it would close so early in Ireland! After, we ran to a McDonald's and all enjoyed some fast food. I thoroughly enjoyed mocking Jon was his morning "hair" routine which I witnessed this morning. We all became fast friends and enjoyed the company tonight!
Wednesday...
Today was our last day in Dublin! Darc and I said our goodbyes to Jon in the morning as we went off to do his own thing. Becky walked around with us for a while in the morning. We went back to the crest/name store and got a few things and also stopped at the Dublin Castle gift shop where I got Anne's Christmas present (well, part of it!). I'm pleased with the things I purchased on this trip (some for others and some for myself!) After saying goodbye to Becky (it was so good to see her after so long and in another country, none the less!) Darc and I made our way to catch the coach to the airport. We were there with some time to spare but it turned out to be a good thing as the airport from a departures point of view is much larger! Our flight back was just as short and we landed in Southampton at 5 and promptly caught the bus. The bus ended up taking an hour and we were stuck in traffic (rush hour and due to an accident). I was starting to get antsy and it was already dark by this point! After such a good trip, I missed Ireland and was feeling the after-vacation letdown. We got back to the old flat and discovered the girls had done a lot of the moving over to the new place for me! How wonderful! Darc and I called a cab and took a few more bags over. Only things left will be the food in the fridge and the last clean. We arrived to the new house with our bags and I felt very tried. I'd forgotten about the cleaning that needs to happen in the new room of mine (there's some mould on the walls). I felt overwhelmed with the unpacking and state of chaos I was currently in. Luckily, we had sheets, and a duvet so our bed was sleepable!
Thursday...
With no pillows to sleep on, the sleep was not the most restful one. But that's alright. Jesse invited us to go on a day trip to Winchester today. On the way into the city centre, Jesse and I both got haircuts. Mine didn't turn out quite as I'd hoped but I'm not too worried. It won't be too long until I'm back in Peterborough and Ann can cut my hair! We stopped at a coffee shop and then promptly caught the train to Winchester. It is such a quaint town and I loved walking around. I got a few more christmas presents at the downtown market and we also found a castle! The ruins were absolutely amazing to walk through! I got a few bits for my halloween costume and we also found the Knights of the Round Table from King Arthur! I, of course, had to send a picture of this to Andrew! Camelottttt! We ate a late lunch in the oldest bar in England (est. 1022). What a great afternoon! In the evening, the girls had planned on having a baking night to prepare for the halloween party tomorrow. I was originally going to go but Darcie and I decided we were worn out and it would be a good time to unpack from Ireland and put some things away in my new room. While I missed the girl time, I appreciated being able to unwind a little bit. To unpack, just a tad, put me in a better state of mind. Hard to believe it's already Thursday and Darcie will be leaving on Sunday morning. It's been so easy getting back into our groove. I'll miss having her here.
Friday...
Happy Halloween! Today, we went back to the old flat to do the last clean and clear out the remaining bits. It took us about an hour to go through and clean and I enjoyed having the company while I organized. Loaded up the backpack with food from the fridge and then met with the guys from my agency. It was good to chat with them in person and figure out a few details that had been on my mind. Darc and I walked up to the city centre where we braved the hoards of people who were lined up in the dollar stores. I was looking for some decorations for the house-- mainly some cobwebs but didn't find anything like that! We was quite the morning/ early afternoon and I was tired by the time we got back to the house. Tonight, we had a halloween party-- fancy dress, of course (which is what the Brits call a costume party). We had a great time with many teachers we met through the agency (Canadian, British, New Zealanders, etc). I met some new people and got to chat with some old-new friends! By the time everyone left, it was about 1:15 am! I was pooped but we really did have a fun time. What a memorable halloween!!
Saturday...
As Darcie's last full day here, we decided to take a day trip. It was tough choosing where our destination would be! In the end, we decided on Portsmouth and Zoe said she'd like to come along, too! We chose the 11:44 train but ended up just missing it. So, Darc and I caught the 12:05 train and Zoe met us there as she came on the next train. We wandered around and finally found somewhere to eat. We tried to make it up to the Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum but once there, we found out it was closed after September. Just our luck. We also wandered around the beautiful park where we saw a bird aviary and a bagpiper! We loved walking around the aviary and seeing the birds, as well as guinea pigs and rabbits! It was a lot of walking but I think worthwhile to be able to do these day trips. On our way home, we stopped at the ASDA and I finally got some tea towels, a hand towel for the bathroom, and some oven mitts! Found out in the dollarstore here that they sell oven mitts by the single... Odd! After making dinner with Hannah and Liz (delish!), Darc packed up her bags while I updated the blog. It was a good reflection tool remembering some of the high points of our week together. I get sad to think of her leaving but am glad she gets to go home, see her family, and her dogs! I joked that she could fit me in her luggage (I'd only put her a few pounds overweight!). Just spending a relaxed night together before an early morning tomorrow getting her to the airport.
